Ann Colbert I would go to Mattapoisett, a fictional utopian society depicted in Marge Piercy's novel from 1976 entitled "Woman on the Edge of Time". The futuristic society embodies many second-wave feminist views about gender, sexuality, and environmentalism. Many of the unique aspects of this society have stuck with me since I first read the novel over twenty years ago.
Ann Colbert Be happy with what you write, then reread it and rewrite, over and over but don't get discouraged because, I think, that's how it works for almost everyone.
Ann Colbert Having an excuse to lose myself in my own mind. Taking a pen or a keyboard and making up people and scenes that are fun to describe and explore.
Ann Colbert I am working on a few things. I am writing the second book in the series titled "A Doctor Reads Tabers" about another doctor who tries to read the medical dictionary. I am also writing a novel about my upbringing as the child of a prison Warden whose family lives on the prison grounds. It centers around one of the trustee inmates. Also I have just finished a piece that will be included in a book about substance abuse in eastern Kentucky. And I am writing a series of short stories that I will try to publish this fall.
Ann Colbert I started reading the medical dictionary - Tabers Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary- a few years ago and wrote commentary on the words. I wanted to publish those notes so I devised a fictional story to go along with the passages.
