M. Arthur Good question. I think getting "in touch" with evil is admitting it is a basic human trait. When I write an evil character, I try to 'humanize' the character. This is someone's son, brother, husband or friend. Evil is defined by acts. Acts are taken based on motivation. Having motivations people can relate too, makes the 'evil' something they can relate too.

One of my books, 'Drop of Evil' was particularly hard to write in this fashion because it's based on the premise that evil is genetic. In fact, the whole reason I started writing the story was trying to look at evil motivations from a different perspective. However, the one overall theme persists...evil can be found in everyone (just as good can be found in everyone).

Thanks for asking,

M
M. Arthur I'm not sure that it inspires me, but I think of my best stuff when I'm driving. I try to write down some notes when I get out of the car.
M. Arthur Writer's block in my house is simply finding time to write. I deal with it by getting a babysitter.
M. Arthur Just enjoying the stories and watching others enjoy them as well.
M. Arthur Everyone, even great writers, write bad stuff. Don't worry if you go back and your work stinks. Just start revising.
M. Arthur A sequel to 'We're All Monsters' called 'Obits'. Casey Matthews, still a suspect in several deaths linked to his daughter's kidnapping (and eventual rescue), is picking up the pieces of his life. Sober, he takes the only journalism job that will have him, writing obituaries. Through the obits, he discovers the work of a serial killer. Trying to stop a killer, he finds rebuilding trust is a two way street.
M. Arthur Sitting in court, covering a murder case for work, someone called the killer a "monster". But that person is still someone's son. Made me think 'We're All Monsters'. So I decided to write a book about the nicest person, forced into a situation where he will do the most terrible things to save his child.
