Lucinda Holdforth Leading Lines is a book about speechwriting and leadership. It comes from many years working as a professional speechwriter, and thinking about the role of speeches in democratic life. It's a guide to the craft of writing speeches, but also a memoir about learning this particular writing craft.
Lucinda Holdforth I'm inspired to write all the time - the world is so annoying, fascinating, confusing!
Lucinda Holdforth I'm not sure what writer's block really is. Sometimes I think it can be wise to stop work on a project that isn't going anywhere. Or else just take a period of rest and reading. I usually write intermittently and intensively, in blocks of a week or two. That can go on for a year or more, until I reach that (rare and) wonderful point where the various bits of writing coalesce and I can see the shape a whole book. Then I start to work very hard.
Lucinda Holdforth I've just started working on a new project. I'm in that nervous, excited stage, where the possibilities seem big but the hurdles seem even bigger.......I won't talk about it yet, just in case it doesn't work. Fingers crossed.....
Lucinda Holdforth My advice for aspiring writers is to explore life, and to read, read, read.
Lucinda Holdforth There are many great things about being a writer, but for me the best thing of all is having a work-in-progress unfolding inside my head. Endless interest, problem solving, creative satisfaction and, perhaps strangely, a feeling of companionship.
Lucinda Holdforth I would go to Nancy Mitford's London and Paris, as portrayed in The Blessing, Don't Tell Alfred and The Pursuit of Love. I'd go shopping at Dior and attend a ball!
Lucinda Holdforth The Weekend by Charlotte Wood
Night Fishing by Vicki Hastrich
