Jonathan Williams I lived in a small village in eastern Morocco for more than two years, serving as a Peace Corps volunteer. It is one of the most beautiful, serene, amazing places on Earth. The people are wonderful and kind, the food is fantastic. Living in North Africa provided the inspiration for my first novel, 'The Prophet's Ladder.' Garnering the courage to write it took another three years upon returning to America, however.
Jonathan Williams I defer to the masterful Neil Gaiman on this subject:
"Believe in yourself. Keep writing."

Jonathan Williams Getting to tell stories and create worlds. It is the ultimate form of escapism.
Jonathan Williams If I can't focus on writing a piece of the story or novel I'm currently working on I'll try and write something else in some other genre or format: a piece of poetry, a short story set deep below the sea, a piece of music. Usually that keeps the writing muscles honed but allows the creative impulse to reset itself.
Jonathan Williams I've always read a great deal, since I was a kid, and I've been writing short stories and poetry all of my life. Writing a book was a larger challenge, one that I've always wanted to attempt but never had the courage to until recently, thanks to the encouragement of my wife.

Day to day inspiration comes from many place: dreams, an overactive imagination, news articles pertaining to scientific discoveries, even going on day hikes in the woods. The world is an exciting place, you just have to actively seek out the interesting stuff.
Jonathan Williams I'm currently working on a piece of historical fiction, set in early 19th century Pennsylvania, dealing with a young man's quest to become a luthier (someone who creates stringed instruments such as guitars or violins). It's a very fun story, both to write and to read.
