Read as much as you can in your preferred genre to stay current, and pay attention to annual 'best-of' anthologies. While reading, pay attention to what in a given novel or story resonates with you, and why. Then, try to incorporate that, in your own way, into your own work.
As far as writing is concerned, keep at it. Try to have a regular writing schedule and stick with it - even 100 words per day is still progress.

Usually I leave my desk and do something that has nothing to do with writing - usually going for a walk, advancing a home renovation project, etc. I find a complete shifting of mental gears takes my mind off the problem, and occasionally I see or hear something that inspires me.

I'm currently writing a short story that I will submit to a Lovecraftian horror anthology that will come out sometime in 2016.
