These days my favorite fictional couple is found in the Sherlock Holmes-Mary Russell novels by Laurie R. King (The first installment is "The Beekeeper's Apprentice.")
King achieves a faithful portrayal of an older Holmes, and his wife Mary is a fearless and admirable heroine. In fact, Russell is one of the important inspirations behind Temper of the Borne, the main female character in my Biblical fiction series, "The Cursed Ground."
I strongly recommend Laurie R. King's "Mary Russell" novels for mystery and adventure fans who like strong female characters.

I guess I'm kind of a nuts-and-bolts guy. I have a couple of pieces of advice, but they might seem kind of obvious:
1. Learn how to get the technical part right. Make sure that you can create clean, well-polished copy. That means learning to spell, learning correct word usage. Learn to produce workmanlike material, or nobody is going to take you seriously.
2. Actually get something written and out in front of an audience. I've met people who say they are writers or say they have a story to tell, yet they haven't actually written anything. Get it on paper (or in an electronic file), and get it published, even if you don't get paid for it. It can be in your free community newsletter or even on your personal blog, but get it written and get it out there.

To be honest, I don't experience writer's block. Writing is my day job. To make a living, I have to deliver on my assignments. Writing is hard work. It's always a struggle. The only way is to push it, to make myself do it.
