Well, the book—Sam And Other Dogs—is about a less-than-perfect Golden Retriever that personified canine attitude, but I loved him anyway. I thought, Why not tell his story, but let the four-legged wiseguy speak for himself?

A second edition of On Grove Street. The first was a disaster and an embarrassment. I don't know what I was thinking. If you have a copy, please burn or recycle it. But ... readers (thank you) liked the story, the characters, the locales, and the details, so a major cleanup/rewrite is in progress, I have professional designers (Mayfly Design, highly recommended) onboard, and I'm not in a hurry, This time, I know what I'm thinking.

I don't worry about it. I've learned that the words will come. Sometimes, they're a complete surprise. Sometimes, I find I'm typing them on my computer before I'm conscious of them. Sometimes, they rattle around inside my head for days before I write them down.

I'm revisiting favorites from my deep backlist—Lord Jim, Martin Eden, The Great Gatsby, Brideshead Revisited, and Arctic Dreams. I've done this before. As I get older and perhaps wiser, each reread offers fresh insights and commands greater respect for the writers. Am also hitting passages from Amy Hempel's short stories and Battlefield, by Peter Svenson.
