Two words: Persistence and Patience.
I learned early on that writing is like that old adage "hurry up and wait." We hurry to finish a project or meet a publishing or contest deadline, then wait for the results, which in many cases is a rejection. We're in a hurry to get that first contract, then must wait months or even a year for the book to come out.
In the meantime, while you wait, don't give up! Work, work, work! It's taken me five years to get my first book contract. The Christmas novella, The Yuletide Angel, releases October 2014.
God has perfect timing. Don't. Give. Up. :)
