I generally find another medium to explore. I listen to music, browse Pinterest, discuss things with other writers. There's so much material to overwhelm us that it helps to take a step back and not feel forced. Art may be a reflection of desperation, but it shouldn't be the desperation itself.

The best thing about being a writer has always been inspiring others to read and write their own work. There's a sense of accomplishment knowing you've passed the torch and helped someone.

My advice for fellow writers is: never give up. People will doubt and put you down, because they don't see your vision. Don't ignore their criticism, but please don't let it defeat you. You will not be the writer you are now in five years: through trial and error your voice will be your own. Keep writing, and above all, keep dreaming.

My most recent book is my poetry collection Splinters with Susie Clevenger. I wanted to explore my memories and open up about the past. In the process, I thought I might help other readers going through the same struggles I did.

I listen to music on the car radio. There is just something about driving: the acceleration and the distance. It makes the rhythm come alive. Pinterest and my friends are also inspiring.
