A lot of times, the block hits because I'm not ready to write that scene. Maybe it's just as simple as more research is needed, but often the reason is that the book/scene/character hits something too emotional for me. Usually, if it's a scene I'll skip it and come back when I'm ready. Once it was a book, and I wrote down the idea then put it away. About two years later I reopened the project and the words flew from my fingers and onto the screen.
