Writing advice is never one size fits all in my experience. However, what I do think is universal advice is that you should write what you're passionate about. If you're working on a project you don't like or resent, that will inevitably shine trough in the quality of said work. If you're going to spend hours, upon hours, and hours with characters and a plot, you might as well do so with characters and a plot you're excited about.
