I would actually have to say I backed into this project. I never expected to write about my first marriage; it was decades ago, and I've been happily married to my second husband for thirty-three years.
But several years ago, I had started meeting monthly with a writers group that had formed after a class where we wrote personal essays. One morning I realized I better get working on something because we had a meeting coming up soon. I opened up one of my many books on writing, hoping to find a prompt for inspiration. I scanned the list--no, no, no, then, Oh, wow, I know what I'd write about there!! The prompt was "If only . . . " and I wrote what has become the first chapter of my memoir.
