There is no good answer for this. Some days you have it. Other days you don't. What I try to tell myself is that when it's not working, there's no point sitting there staring at a screen. But in reality, I do that anyway. I wish I could make myself stop wasting those hours.

The best thing about the kind of work I do is the opportunity to dive into subjects and worlds I would never otherwise experience. I've had the tremendous good fortune to visit with people in so many different jobs and places and every one of them has changed me in some small way. I like to say I know a little bit about a lot of things, but only a lot about a few things. I'm great at cocktail parties, where I can run away to the bathroom when the questioning gets too intense.

Magazine stories at the moment, but I think I have my next book lined up already. I just can't talk about it yet.

It's a story that's fascinated me for years. I can't remember where I first heard about it -- I wasn't alive when the vast majority of the story took place -- but it's one of those idea germs that just floated around in my head and a few years back when another book project collapsed in spectacular fashion, I sat down and thought, 'What's another story I could really dig into?' I started looking around for new information on Azorian and realized it was actually a great time to attempt this incredible story. I'm glad I did.
