Susan Forest I've learned over time that I can solve problems that crop up in my writing. I start with a detailed outline and do a ton of thinking about why my characters are where they are, do what they do, and face what they face, before I start writing. If I come up with a problem in the middle of writing, I do some hard thinking about their wants, needs, fears, and obstacles, but I also let down time--a nap or shower, a walk or bike ride--do the digesting for me. The answer always comes.
Susan Forest I love being my own boss: waking up in the morning and knowing I plan my own day, and a good portion of that day includes playing with my imaginary friends!
Susan Forest Although there is no need to get a university degree in writing, that doesn't mean there's no body of knowledge about how to write well. Reading the award winners, reading books in your field and out of it, taking courses, joining writers' groups, writing--a lot--and listening to thoughtful critique are all routes to good writing. And good writing is the best route to publication.
Susan Forest Bursts of Fire, Book 1 of the Addicted to Heaven series will be out this summer, and the second book in the series, Flights of Marigolds, is finished and in edits. Book 3, Scents of Slavery is almost complete. I also recently finished a short story, Breeding Laughter, that needs to be edited.
Susan Forest Never a problem for me. I have more ideas to write about than I have time. Having said that, research always sparks ideas, as does nature exercise--the more I ski, walk, bike, work out or ride the back of my husband's motorcycle, the more ideas I get.
Susan Forest While camping, I thought it would be fun to write a romp: a lighthearted heist. Although those elements are in my series, I soon found the underlying ideas I was working with also had dark, dramatic elements. I'm happy with the result though--I think the book has weight as well as adventure.
