Ask your family and friends what should happen next in the story you're writing. Maybe someone might hit on a great idea, but more often than not their ideas will be so off base, you'll be compelled to think of a better one. ;-)

Rose's Will started out as a memoir, centered around my relationship with my estranged mother, but when I met Eli, her end-of-life companion, at her funeral, I rewrote it as a novel. He was such an interesting character that I befriended him and gave him a voice in my book.
