Robb T. White The Last Halloweener

Old Man Wessell, jolted awake on his sofa from a hideous dream of writhing shapes by the doorbell’s chime, grabbed a last fistful of candy corn for yet another late Halloweener—damned trick-or-treating nonsense—flinging open the screen door to expose a tall figure in a Grim Reaper mask staring back at him while it placed a bony finger to invisible lips and snatching Wessell’s wrist in an iron grip, candy corn clattering free across the porch, leading Wessell down the steps, away into the darkness, after a lifetime of bitter regrets, making him finally understand: I am the last Halloweener.

Robb T. White Joyce,

My apologies for the long delay in responding. Simple answer, however: I was contemplating writing my first detective fiction novel & trying to come up with a name. I looked over at my bookshelf and the name that caught my attention immediately was Thomas Haftmann. The title of his book eludes me now but it was on the subject of modern painting. I liked the surname because I had in mind a character who had a dark side--ergo, "half-man." I'm happy to let any readers decide what the other half is. By the way, my own ancestry is Irish, not German. Best, Robb White
