Beverley Brenna Any form of art offers creators the opportunity to render "something from nothing." Such work is joyful and satisfying, always a learning opportunity, and contributes hopefully to the greater good.
Beverley Brenna I think writer's block is identical to other things that block us from getting projects done...cleaning out the panty...pasting new wallpaper. As with any other taxing work, set a goal, plan a timeline, and then just begin. Key is that with writing (unlike wallpaper) revision is always possible!
Beverley Brenna I'm polishing a new verse novel for young adults as well as two middle-grade manuscripts.
Beverley Brenna My newest writing comes from listening to the news and thinking about ways we can support our children in a complicated world. I keep a list of story ideas that are influenced by current events, and when I have time I have a look at that list to see whether a spark will catch, helping me into an interesting characterization.
Beverley Brenna Read contemporary books in the age category you wish to write for, and just write. Most of my writing is plain old hard labor--nothing easy about it, just making time and putting ideas on paper. Most successful authors I know plow through many drafts to mine the good stuff--again, simple hard work that builds over time something worthwhile.
Beverley Brenna I read a great deal of children's literature and other Canadian writers energize and inspire my work. I recently finished Sara Cassidy's junior novel A Boy Named Queen--what a beautiful, simple story about difference and friendship.
