My career was over— I couldn’t do my job anymore. I was very good at it and I’d dedicate my life to it. Struggling with PTSD, a trauma therapist recommended journaling my experiences to discuss in a group setting. They were classified, so she recommended I just fictionalize them. Not only did it help heal me, but I found my passion and my second chance at life.

Don’t stop writing. You’re already a writer, not an aspiring one. Don’t wait. Finish the story and move on—write the next one immediately. Keep honing your craft and try something new in each book, whether device or technique. Be bold. Write big. Take big chances. Getting to know other published authors is the path into the industry. Don’t waste your time with blind agent queries—that’s not how you find a good agent. You find a good agent through networking.

I’ve never had it. Think. Outline. Prepare. If you’re writing and you don’t know what to do or where to go, you haven’t thought through and baked the story long enough in your head. Before you write, always know where the story is going and you’ll never meet with the myth of writer’s block.
