Ellen Hampton Doctors were caught in the terrifying moral labyrinth between their oath to save and protect, and rules set by the Nazi-led government in France between 1940 and 1944. Many doctors organized Resistance networks, writing false medical certificates keep prisoners out of camps and young men from being sent to work in German factories. Others fled to join the Free French in London: Dr. André Lichtwitz scrawled "Gone to fight!" across his office door before sneaking across the Spanish border. Some American doctors stayed to do what they could, such as Sumner Jackson, at The American Hospital of Paris. But there were also doctors who were pleased to see the anti-Jewish policies that forced some 700 doctors out of their practices in Paris alone. "Doctors at War: the Clandestine Fight Against the Nazi Occupation of France" provides a dramatic, character-driven look at choices made by medical professionals in those shadowbound years of occupation. To be published in March 2023 by Louisiana State University Press.
