Money of course! Wait, I thought the question was, "What's the one thing you miss about being a writer?"
I won't kid you, writing is hard. Many days I feel like a boxer who's just too tired to get back in the ring. But every now and then there come these transcendental moments when the characters speak to me, or a plot knot unravels with elegant simplicity, or a thousand perfect words appear on the screen as fast as I can type them. My favorite "best thing" is feeling I ought to stop for a bite of lunch only to find it's 5:30PM. I write for those moments.

I do a lot of pacing. Sometimes, if I'm stuck, I'll leave it for a day or two, and when I sit back down at the keyboard, the idea I needed is waiting for me. Other times, I resign myself to typing a lot of crap that I must sift through to find the kernel that will move me forward. I highly recommend showers—I've had more epiphanies there than I can count.

Read J. A. Konrath's blog. The world of publishing has entered a new and radical phase. Readers, not publishers are determining what sells. Soon, the gatekeepers will become irrelevant. The downside is there will be a lot more chaff in the marketplace. But that's what critics are for. So keep reading, and keep writing.

Now that's a loaded question. I am inspired by an idea, but that happens early in the writing process. After that, it's more perspiration than inspiration. Some mornings you wake up and think, "I'd rather do anything else today other than write." But you force yourself to sit down and start typing. Then, if you're lucky, the magic happens and the words start to flow.
