I rarely have writer's block. When I do, however, I freethink words and phrases onto a blank page, not censoring myself as I go. The words invariably form into a compelling first paragraph of a new book or short story. Most, of course, lie dormant and never get developed any further. But many are interesting enough to pursue. I try to let the resulting story develop itself as I watch.

I got the idea when my wife and I visited the Cape May community on vacation one winter almost forty years ago. The old Victorian houses along the shore there seemed withdrawn in the cold January air, and exuded a sense of hidden malice. This fascinated me and gave rise to the idea they might secretly be talking to each other about dark deeds perpetrated within their walls over the past hundred years or so since they had been built.
