Thanks so much for your enthusiasm. Knowing there are readers eagerly awaiting my next work inspires me to keep going.
My current work-in-progress has Margaret and John meeting in a different place and time, one more enchanting than either the book or the film version.

Hi Jess, thanks for reading my books and for asking a question!
I was surprised to find that some people expected John to be broody and reserved even after he wins Margaret.
Except for the final three pages, Gaskell's John Thornton spends the entire book in some form of frustration due to Margaret's indifference or rejection of him. But he's hardly emotionally reserved, although he must suppress the expression of his feelings.
Thornton's longing for Margaret is intense. He aches to be able to touch her, to feel her arms around him. He can barely function at times for the desperate anguish he feels. This is a man who wants to love and be loved! I can't imagine his love for her being tepid or casual.
There are just too many instances in the original book that shows how intense John Thornton's emotions are. I haven't found a literary hero more passionately in love than John Thornton.

I have on "A Heart For Milton" on my bookshelf, and I smile every time I see it. "In Consequence" is so well written, with the logic and emotions of the AU changes flowing so seamlessly, that I highly recommend it to everyone who likes Gaskell's novel!
