Brooks Rexroat I think the nicest thing about being a writer is simply the opportunity to cultivate imagination in a semi-productive fashion.
Brooks Rexroat Thrift Store Coats came together over a long course of time: I finished up graduate school at Southern Illinois University with a handful of solid stories and I continued to produce numbers of short stories at a really quick clip in the years that followed, but it took a while to find a point around which a book might eventually coalesce. I think it was the writing and subsequent publication of Blood off Rusted Steel that gave the book a gathering theme, and I shuffled stories in and out of the lineup for a long while before finally settling on this group. During the process, each story came from a distinct moment, observation, or question, and the book as a whole came together after the independent stories.
