Shelley K. Wall Life throws so many really great situations my way - scary ones, funny conversations, wonderfully romantic ideas, and dangerous near-misses, etc. I will often take bits and pieces of those and spice them up to create a scene.

I also read a lot and learn from authors that are super talented.
Shelley K. Wall I just completed the first draft of a thriller entitled Cemetery of Secrets. I'm now working through the edits. The book is so exciting-it is told completely in the first person.
Shelley K. Wall 1. Persistence - it is easy to say you want to write, not so easy to follow thru and finish.
2. Seek on-going education to sharpen your skills. No matter how much we know, it always helps to refresh or learn a different way of accomplishing a task.
3. Be nice.
4. Be patient. If your first book struggles, don't give up. Keep writing. Success in any endeavor doesn't happen overnight. Every great author didn't get there overnight, they struggled and revised just as you will.
5. Don't quit your day job.
6. Write what you love, not what you think is popular. I've sometimes struggled with this...but you will be happiest if you stick with your own preferences.
Shelley K. Wall Actually, almost everything.

It allows me to write characters that do things so far from my own personality that it's entertaining.
It allows me to explore places and situations that sound exciting.
It allows me to meet other authors and readers that sometimes become great friends.
There's a whole list of pluses...only one minus so far...my butt hurts from sitting in front of my computer half the time (LOL.)
