Lisa Karon Richardson I'm currently working on a novella called A Family Inheritance, but soon I'll be working to finalize the sequel to The Peacock Throne.
Lisa Karon Richardson The best thing about being an author is when you get into the "zone" of writing and everything else fades away. When that happens for me I can see what is happening in my head, almost like a movie, and I'm typing as fast as I can to keep up. It's sort of like what happens when you're reading a great book, but the distinction is that I get to direct the action. Those moments are a real high and make up for the times when it is a lot harder to get the words down.
Lisa Karon Richardson I like to listen to movie soundtracks while I write. They can really help to establish a mood. But otherwise waiting for inspiration isn't really a luxury I can afford anymore. I've found that the more I've been disciplined about writing, the more willingly my muse shows up on time.
Lisa Karon Richardson I hesitate to add one more pebble to the mountain of advice that's already out there for authors. It seems like for every sage adage there is an equal and opposite maxim. The truth is that the advice that motivates one person will drain someone else. The only thing I can think of that is truly universal is that writers should read broadly. It can be difficult when you're learning the craft of writing and you get caught up in the technicalities. Author A who you always loved suddenly seems like a hack, and Author B writes so beautifully you feel like a hack. Keep reading. You'll eventually regain your literary equilibrium. You can learn something from ever book you read.
Lisa Karon Richardson For me writer's block generally occurs because I don't know how to get myself out of some corner into which I've written myself. The cure is brainstorming. Once I know what the heck is supposed to happen, writing it down is a whole lot easier!
