My fifth book takes place in Southern Minnesota during World War I. My main character's wife has lost her third child in as many years. As they grieve, he gets word that he has a child from a previous marriage, which confounds him. Meanwhile, he suffers from claustrophobia and, determined to overcome it, volunteers for tank duty in France.

I love pouring words onto a page and reworking them until I have created tension and built characters who are bigger than life. I then enter my finished work into competitions. Getting positive feedback is right up there with gulping an icy glass of water on a blistering day in the middle of a parched desert.
