Charlotte Gordon I was fascinated to discover that Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley were mother and daughter. Somehow, despite my many degrees in English literature, I had not fully realized this. When I began to read about both women, I became more and more engrossed. I looked for a biography of mother and daughter, and when I found there wasn't one, I realized I would have to write it myself.
Charlotte Gordon I don't wait for inspiration. I sit down and write every day, or every day that I can get to my desk.
Charlotte Gordon I am not at liberty to talk about this yet!
Charlotte Gordon Be brave. Give yourself permission to write Bad First Drafts. Build a community of writer friends.
Charlotte Gordon The freedom, the life of the mind, the cultivation of the imagination.
Charlotte Gordon I give myself permission to write anything I want, even if it does not seem related to whatever project I am currently working on. If I am very anxious or very stuck, I start the writing day as simply as possible. For example, I might record daily details in my notebook -- the weather, what I had for breakfast, what I did the night before, and after a few minutes of recording these sorts of things, I am generally able to move onto the work at hand.
