During the COVID pandemic, I was stuck at home with too much time on my hands. I ordered a PS5 video game console to keep myself occupied. One of my favorite games was Red Dead Redemption II, a first-person shooter set in the American Old West. I also used my computer to explore EVE Online, a space-based multiplayer role-playing game featuring big battles between starship dreadnoughts and different factions all fighting for dominance in the galaxy. Great fun for a man my age!
Then I started to wonder what would happen if Arthur Morgan, the outlaw protagonist of Red Dead Redemption, somehow ended up on one of the big battlecruisers! Could he adapt? How would the spacers react? I tinkered with the idea for a while until I had worked out the inciting incident to bring the two together.
It took three years for "The Geronimo Solution" to go from a nascent idea to a completed manuscript.
