The best thing is creating a place, people, that come to life. Most of my books take place in the mountains of East Tennessee where my parents and grandparents were born and raised and I've spent a lifetime in those beautiful Appalachian mountains.

What inspires me most are people. Almost every character in my books are based on someone I know. And so, being around those people make me want to write about them. Scenery is another huge conduit for inspiration. My books are deep in setting and prose and when I'm in beautiful settings, it makes me want to capture it in my book(s).

With A Splintered Dream, I had watched the movie The Rookie for about the 30th time, and at the end, I thought to myself, "I was a baseball player; I love baseball. Tomorrow I need to write a book about a baseball player."
