J. Alan Childs My history book is based on a headline I found in the Manitoba Archives. I was researching about lacrosse in Manitoba, where book in flamethrowers is based. The headline was "Winnipeg welcomes the Lacrosse Champions of the United States from St. Paul."
Having lived in Minnesota since 1992, I am originally from Southern California, I had not heard of lacrosse being a big sport in Minnesota. I looked and found out that Minnesota had been national champions and I had to write and tell the world about Midwest lacrosse.
J. Alan Childs Our family became involved in lacrosse for various reasons. My youngest son, Brody, wanted a chapter book to read for class on lacrosse. We couldn't find any geared towards kids. I asked him to come up with a sports hero for lacrosse one summer. He came up with Kenny and the Flamethrowers. It was such a fun concept I wanted to see it make it to the book shelves for other kids like him.
J. Alan Childs My history book is finished and awaiting to be published. I am writing Flamethrowers book 2 and 3 right now. Yes both at once.
J. Alan Childs I had to read a lot to find what I liked. After that you have to want it. No really want it. Stephen King answers this as he writes everyday, every single day. Do not stop. The best time to write is when you're excited in the beginning. And when you let up to give yourself a break you lose that. I set aside time to write every week. I read every night. Best advice I got was read a lot, write a lot.
J. Alan Childs Being able to create your own world is a powerful thing. Now that I'm on the other side of raising five kids I have time to explore ideas and explore worlds of interest.
