Ask the Author: Marty Essen

“5/24/18: I wrote “Time Is Irreverent” for a liberal audience. This book will upset Trump fans and literalist Christians. I hate to discourage sales, but it beats having unhappy readers and reviewers.” Marty Essen

Marty Essen Work with the best editor you can and re-write until it hurts. Then, if agents and publishing companies still pass on your book, screw 'em! Publish independently and show the agents and publishing companies just how wrong they were!
Marty Essen Because I write about the environment and protecting both wildlife and wild places, I feel as if-- in my own small way--I am making the world a better place.

I also enjoy the challenge of promoting what I write and turning it into other mediums. For instance, I turned "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet" into a live stage show, which I have been performing at colleges for eight years. That show is now the second most popular slide-show of all-time (behind Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth").
Marty Essen Because I write nonfiction, I don't often get writer's block. I usually write because something has inspired me (perhaps an interesting animal find or a political issue) to write.
Marty Essen I just finished writing "Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico". That book will be published October 1, 2015. In the meantime, I am doing everything I can (including this interview) to generate excitement for my new book. Trust me . . . you'll love it!

I also have three wildlife-oriented children's books in the works and have started a new blog, which you can find at: www.Marty-Essen.com

Marty Essen Since I write about endangered species and protecting wild places, inspiration comes easily. I want to change the world!
Marty Essen For my first book, "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents," I started writing about my travel adventures for two newspapers. When I realized that no one had ever written a book on the concept of travel to all seven continents, looking for rare and interesting wildlife, I continued my travels around the world and changed my writing style from newspaper format to book format.

My second book, "Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico," continues on that theme, but will be more photo-intensive. "Endangered Edens" will be published on October 1, 2015.
