Getting dumped from an ornery steed in front of the Sphinx in Egypt (very, VERY lucky the neck remained in one piece), running with those more-ornery bulls in Pamplona, seeing Barça play inside the Camp Nou in Barcelona, watching the bullfights in Pamplona and Mallorca, flying through the Venetian canals on a Chris Craft at midnight and pulling into the depot as the caboose was inching away from the station, and making it onto the beast just as it was picking up steam. Diving into the Red Sea. Buying lunch for two Swedish stewardesses poolside on a glorious afternoon at the Nile Hilton. Eating sushi in Tokyo, and ordering all favorites in Japanese, while every other colleague sauntered off to McDonald's or Subway. Never taking enough photos of the Sydney Opera House. Having a beer in Al Capone's old haunt in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Costa Rica. Bangkok. Taiwan. Nagoya. Cannes. Hong Kong. Valley of the Kings, Luxor. Santander and Bilbao. Amsterdam. Munich. Berlin. Prague. Ahh, Prague. It can be a rich life.

Fortunately, it found me. The publishing house/editor was seeking someone to pen a project on the burgeoning world of sports betting, how to do it, whom to listen to, tricks and tips of the trade ... again, fortunately, it found me through a series of people. Having lived in Las Vegas for 17 years, I had built up enough key contacts that, I knew (or hoped very, very much), could lead to other important sources to do the topic justice. And it panned out that way, with vital insights from both sides of the counter. Very happy with how it turned out. (Sports Betting for Winners)

Avoid cliché like the (bleep-bleepin') plague. The title of a Martin Amis tome says it best—The War Against Cliché. Be original. Adopt/purchase Hemingway's bullshit detector, and always leave it ON. "Things"—no such word. Laziest one in the dictionary. Easily. There is always—Always, ALWAYS—a better option, one with more clarity, insight, detail ... ALWAYS. (In a quote, yeah, go ahead. But your own words? Strike this one. Permanently.) In a long-ago newsroom, an editor hammered this home when she fumed, "Things? WHAT things?!?" as she reviewed a poor soul's copy. She got that person on the phone pronto. I still her that shriek. And don't tell me; show me. It will be vital to keep your monthly overhead low, as low as possible, because that will matter most when inevitably scrambling for work, an editor moves on, a magazine folds ... surprise, entertain, and have fun.
