Christine Heppermann Even though it's dark, "Blow Your House In" is probably my favorite, or maybe it's more accurate to say it's the one I'm most proud of. I feel like it captures the self-destructive, counter-intuitive mindset behind eating disorders, where being "strong" means being physically insubstantial, building yourself out of straw instead of bricks.
Christine Heppermann A young adult novel-in-verse inspired by my Catholic upbringing. It's about a girl who attends an all-girl Catholic high school and is starting to question her beliefs.
Christine Heppermann Wow, that's hard to say, because I've been drawn to fairy tales for as long as I can remember. I think it's that, on the surface, they seem so basic. But the closer you look, the more layers you see. You can appreciate them as straight-up adventures, but you can also view them metaphorically. Probably not many of us have been literally locked away in towers, but we know how it feels to be constrained. To want to be loved and protected, but also free.
Christine Heppermann Keep writing! Your brain will try to convince you you're no good. Other people might try, too. Don't listen.
Christine Heppermann Lattes. (I do most of my writing in coffee shops.) Also that feeling after working really hard on a poem or some other piece of writing and seeing it finally come together. I tend to think of it as the poem emerging from the mist. I flail around forever, not knowing where I'm going or how I'll get there, and suddenly--though of course it's not really sudden--the answers appear.
Christine Heppermann Not well! I try to be Zen about it. But I'm a perfectionist, so I get paralyzed a lot trying--and failing--to make all my words shiny and beautiful. The only thing I can do, really, is keep telling myself to push through it. And, eventually, I do.
