Mostly I just write whatever pops in my head. Usually it is just random thoughts and ideas but it doesn't matter, it's writing. I save them either in my computer or scraps of paper. When I am really lucky, one of these random thoughts will actually turn into something. I save everything. You never know which seed will grow and blossom.
Oh, and read, read everything and often. It will keep your mind and imagination in shape.
