Definitely Both ;) I started the first book based on a dream, and only established the basic outline of the entire series while I wrote the second book. The outline is very good for creating suspense and rearranging the chapters after I have most of it completed.

Great question. Book 2 (Sonora, and the Scroll of Alexandria) comes out at the end of October. I'm currently writing Book 3. My current plan is to have it into the editors by fall of 2015, with a release date in December or January, but that is TBD.
