My previous books have been set in Salford, where I was born and bred so I wanted to set a book in the North East of England, where I have spent most of my life and where my daughters and their children live. More specifically I wanted it to be set in Lovendale, a fictitious area on outstanding natural beauty that has featured in some of my short stories over the years. I had an idea about somebody planning to spend time somewhere quiet after a life crisis. Murder puts paid to this.

I don’t! There is no point in waiting for inspiration. Either you want to write or you don’t. You just have to get on with it. Inspiration comes from thinking about ideas and then putting them into a story. Writing itself is inspiring, especially when ideas start to come together.

I am working on another novel about Salford private investigator and a second Lovendale mystery. I recently won first prize in the National Association of Writers’ Groups novella competition with Working to Rule, a satire set during the 2049 football season. My dystopian story A State of Grace was recently published in an anthology called Trouble. It was one of the ones chosen from those submitted to a University of Huddersfield competition. Despite being a member of the Crime Writers’ Association, I like to try our different genres.

First make up your mind whether you want to be a writer or just like the idea. Then decide whether you want to be published or simply write for pleasure. After that you must practise. Joining a writing group or class worked for me but it may not suit everybody. You should listen to feedback and learn from it - not all of it is useful but remember writing has to be learned.
