Lacey Dearie For Leger's Reunion, as with most of the Leger stories, I just sit down and I dredge up ideas from the back of my mind. Leger's Love was different because it was inspired by the murder of a person I knew and I was involved in that trial and questioned as a witness. I think my own experience and emotional involvement shines through in that story. It's my personal favourite. Leger's Lights is going to be similar, not because I was connected to a murder victim but it has been inspired by a series of events that happened close to home. But the other stories have to be squeezed out of the back of my mind. I spend a lot of time plotting.
Lacey Dearie I have no magic formula for getting inspired. It just happens! If I'm blocked, I do all I can to clear that block by getting out and about but otherwise inspiration just flows, especially with the Leger series which is probably the project that's flowed the easiest.
Lacey Dearie I'm finishing off the Leger Christmas trilogy. It's weird writing festive stories at this time of year but I'm really enjoying it. I'm currently at the early stages of the second book, Leger's Lights. In this story Leger's family and a few friends are in the Highlands renting a cottage for a winter break and a murder has taken place just as they arrive. Nicole, along with Leger, Ginger and Amber will witness the body being buried by the culprits but as she tries to escape and alert the police the killers chase after her and run her down in their car. Unfortunately, Poppy arrives in the area to talk to Nicole about her crush on Poppy's boyfriend and she is driving a similar car to the killers. She is arrested for the attempted murder of Nicole. Leger has to fight to clear Poppy's name, find the real killers and locate Ginger and Amber who have been lost since the hit and run. It's going to be tense and it's an ambitious project but I am really loving it.
Lacey Dearie Firstly, be patient. It took me twelve years to get to where I am now and I still have a long way to go before I'll be satisfied with my career. Also, don't expect every day to be a good day. I have days when sales drop, I'm getting one star reviews, I can't clear my head and everybody seems to be demanding my attention. Take a deep breath, eat some chocolate or drink some coffee (whatever your vice is) and sit down to write. Lastly, don't accept every opportunity that comes your way. People expect writers to work for free much of the time and if you value yourself and your skills as worth nothing, you're selling yourself short, no matter who you are or how good/bad your work is. Everybody deserves to be paid for their time and effort.
Lacey Dearie Being able to create whole worlds and new people in your head. It gives me a real buzz.
Lacey Dearie I go somewhere really busy with lots of people like a shopping centre or an airport. The more populated the location is, the better. Then I sit with a drink and in my head I write the story of their lives and why they are there. If my block is really bad I'll go back to the town where my day job was and just walk around with my headphones in my ears listening to music like I used to do on my lunch breaks. That reminds me what I don't want out of life and motivates me.
