What a fun question! Off the top of my head, I would like to travel to the remote monastery in the mountains of Japan where Jiko, the wise grandmother of "A Tale for the Time Being" (Ruth Ozeki) lives as abbot-in-residence. I want to enter the green, quiet of her solitary temple and watch her take part in ritual and join her in silence.

Inspiration comes in different forms: sometimes an image; sometimes an incident that confounds me. The image or incident lodges in my brain and gestates. I try to leave it alone. I know that it's there, but I trust the process of letting it sit and grow fat and hairy until it bursts into full-blown prose. Then it takes years of writing and re-writing to become a novel.
