I think most children have the ability to make up stories to entertain themselves. I think I was a stubborn child who simply refused to grow up and stop telling stories.
I have a very active, vivid imagination, and use fiction and fantasy as a means to deal with the stresses of life. It's much cheaper than a therapist and a bit healthier than alcohol. :-)
I write because I need to. If no one read my work, I would still write, because the characters simply demand it.

I use two methods to fight writer's block. First, I write on a schedule, usually in the evenings around 7pm. I find it much more difficult to write earlier in the day as I'm used to having a regular work day to contend with. I also write using music as a trigger, every chapter has an associated song.
My second strategy against writer's block is having a second creative outlet. I draw and paint. If I'm not writing, I'm drawing. In Centernia's earliest days, I created scenes and characters, a practice that has stuck with me. Spending time with the art put me better in tune with the characters and their visual world.
