Ollie Kayuro While teaching in a school, I discovered that the most effective way to teach children grammar rules was through the use of fairy tales. I started writing short stories that brought grammar to life. I revisited this idea years later and created a universe called Alphabetaria. In this bookish kingdom, letters are characters who befriend one another, talk, play, sing, and continue to learn. Kind fairies and wizards read with them and help them create new words. The more the letters play and explore, the more words appear in our real world.
I hope kids come away feeling curious about language, confident in their own voices, and delighted by the magic of letters.
Ollie Kayuro This summer, I focused on craft books about writing fairy tales. In particular, I read Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale" and "The Historical Roots of the Fairy Tale" (often published together). They’re foundational studies of plot functions and motifs, and they gave me practical tools for structuring my own wonder tale.
