Fill the well! Julia Cameron recommends this in THE ARTIST'S WAY. I'm not sure if she coined the phrase, but it really works. You can't keep writing if your soul is running on empty. Take a break: read other books (in or outside your genre), watch movies and TV shows, go for walks, experience real life. Those things refuel you and after a few days or so, you'll be ready to get back in the chair.

A few years ago, there was a story in the news about a teen basketball player who was brutally sexually assaulted by his teammates. I wanted revenge for him, I was so angry. I decided that the River Reapers would be the perfect avengers. That story is in A FATAL PROSPECT, Book 3.

I think it's going to be a YA binge this summer. I'm dying to read both of Nicola Yoon's books, as well as Angie Thomas's debut. Then Anna Marie McLemore's WILD BEAUTY comes out this fall and I am so, so ready.

The Nanny with the Skull Tattoos was self-published in 2015 and re-published in 2016 by Booktrope. When I got the idea, I was actually working on something else. I remember thinking that, as a society, we're super supportive of single moms. But what if a single dad, whose daughter was born when he was in high school, wanted to go to college and pursue a career? How would that work? And what if, with no support, he was forced to hire a nanny off of Craigslist? They're supposed to obey those boundaries, but what if they fell in love?
I forced myself to finish what I was working on, then started writing, completely consumed by this idea.

This is a great question, Jason! This actually happened to me recently. I was agonizing over everything: low sales, an upcoming podcast interview, the book that I am writing (Leaving Hopeville). At the same time, I got slammed with a pretty bad episode of depression. Being human is fun. I realized that I needed to let go of all the things that I was clinging to. Mostly, I had this perfect image in my head of how things should be, how my life as an author should be. Letting go and saying "it is what it is" helped me so much.
I didn't stop caring, but I did stop obsessing.
I also had to do some things to help heal my mind: therapy, medication, journaling, etc. I'm still doing all of those things to stay on track, and I'm still practicing letting go. :)

I am writing THE NANNY WITH THE SKULL TATTOOS, a contemporary New Adult romance novel. Max hires Savannah to move in with him and his two-year-old daughter so that he can keep going to school, but when he falls in love with her, it might be a conflict of interest. I am about 75% done writing the first draft! Click here for more information: http://elizabethbarone.net/the-nanny-...
