I usually have several things going on and crank out short stories periodically. If I'm not getting a good sound out of my Fender I switch to my Gibson, if I may be excused the appalling metaphor.

Live a lot. Get out there and meet as many different kinds of people as you can and learn everything you can. Read a lot. Write every day.
To start, simply write a scene, 800-2000 words. If it sucks, figure out why and rewrite it. Then write another. Pretty soon you have a book.
