The short answer is the events are real and the characters have been changed to reduce the number of people involved and fit the story better.
The events happened very much as described, though the time lines were compressed in some cases so the story didn't go on forever. The characters were more fictionalized, meaning multiple people are represented by one character to make it easier for the reader to keep track of the players.
One thing about characters that I did not change is the Chinese women engineers were the sharpest of the bunch, in some cases solving major parts of mysteries single handedly.
