One that comes to mind is Larry Niven's Ringworld. While I found the female character portrayals terrible, the premise of a vast artificial ring-shaped construct existing around a far-distant star is fascinating. He throws a lot of tech at us attempting to explain how each aspect of this world would work: day/night, mountains/seas, and its civilisation's rise and fall. Would it work? Well, I'd like to visit and take a look! A flyby – of how many weeks? – of a part of the ring would be stunning.
