I often get asked when I'm going to write a love story. So one day I sat down and said, "Okay! I'm going to try to write romance!" Well, two hours later, the general plot is written and we have time travel, voodoo, and 40s era mobsters in the mix. Figures. But, look! It's a love story!

Two books: a time travel noir standalone (I think), and a twisty urban fantasy. The time travel noir is so much fun, and I'm not sure it's been done before (but probably has), and the characters are so engaging that it doesn't feel like work. I can't wait to share it.

Just write. Write everything. Write about your day, write about your Aunt Fanny and her cats, write about ideas and songs and sparks of things that won't leave you. It's hard going at first, but the more you write, the easier it comes to you. Don't worry about publishing or money or anthologies or sharing your work. Your job in the beginning is to write, to practice your craft. If you try to publish before you're ready, you will regret it. Just write for a year, five years, ten years. When it flows, when it gets easy, when it gets good, you'll know it.

In my experience, writer's block happens because either there's something wrong with your story or with your mindset. Being in an emotional rut can stall your creativity, so if I'm feeling down, I know that I need to take care of myself. Take a day, read some good books, drink tea with real cream. If it's the story that's stopping me, I go back and figure out where I went wrong. These two tricks have never failed to work for me.
