Hello Maree - thank you for this. No, I have not read Roger Peters but do have his four volume study, which is on my "one day" list. A friend says it's quite good, so maybe I will push it up toward the top. The Sonnets seem to be an inexhaustible source of speculation (including by me).
Meanwhile I am working on something of my own (not to do with Shakespeare), which comes first, as it must.
Thanks again.

Actually this is personal in a way that makes me unwilling to answer it. Ask me another.

NIxk and Nora Charles of The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett. They had an easy camaraderie that made them appealing, and their relationship was the spur to spinoffs as a result.

Hey Robert thanks for asking me - normally I would be a starter but sadly I don't own a Kindle. Since Amazon now owns goodreads I am not sure it is the done thing to say so, but I don't list my books on Amazon partly because I don't want to tie my readers to that device. .mobi (the platform used by Kindle) can download books on smashwords.
Is it available in hard copy? I'll check.
Thanks for alerting me.

This isn't easy to answer actually. There is a wealth of sources of inspiration, in life as in writing, and dipping into as many springs as possible seems like a good idea. I read a lot but not in any one area. Shakespeare remains my most important model even though I write neither poetry nor plays.

Just keep going. Learn from others. Raymond Chandler advised, "Analyse and emulate". Those three words are enough if you really want to be a writer.

There is no one best thing and plenty of good things. Even if a writer could rank all the good things in some kind of order, each writer would have personal favourites I feel sure. The pleasure of crafting a beautifully written passage is certainly very important to me.

Keep writing. That sounds foolish but it's not really. You can write something different from what you're not making any progress with.
