Dawn Kohler Working in your pajamas!
Dawn Kohler This is one of my favorite questions. I was at a low point in my life—my two younger children had just left town to attend college, and suddenly I was living alone for the first time in my life. During what was an extremely quiet fall, I found myself yearning for what I have often yearned for in my life—an older, wiser, educated woman who could help me better manage such changes. So I created Emma Daines, a 72-year- old reclusive American hero. At the time, she was an alchemy of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who wrote one of my favorite books, Gift from the Sea; and Dr. Judy B. Rosener, a professor at the business school at UCI who inspired Emma’s wit and charming personality. But after a while, Emma took on a life of her own and became a great source of comfort.
Dawn Kohler I wanted to be a writer from a very young age but since I was challenged to spell most words correctly, I figured I didn't have the talent. So I tucked the aspiration away until I was hit by a pretty deep depression in my early 30's. I wrote my way back to health and realized in the process that we really do need to do what we love. It's what makes us happy.
Dawn Kohler I am currently working on my second book in the Emma Daines series. The main characters are dealing with issues of trust. A issue that is very familiar to me so I'm very exciting about where the book is heading and what I'm learning along the way.
Dawn Kohler The advice I have heard is to write, show up on the page, set aside time. All good advice but I think what was most helpful for me was creating characters like Emma Daines that I loved to spend time with. If you love your topic or characters you will make time to spend with them. Writing is like any good relationship--best to engage instead of avoid. :)
Dawn Kohler I usually take a very long walk or hike. By the time I get back, and that's might be in 12 miles, the ideas are usually flowing again.
