Aside from the obvious answer (Star Wars—who wouldn’t want to swing a lightsaber and pilot a rust-bucket starship?), I’d have to say Red Rising. That world is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. I don’t know if I’d survive long, but I’d want to see it for myself—the gravity-carved cities, the ancient moons, the impossible odds. Maybe I’d just be a quiet Red with a good heart and a dream of something more.

I’m currently reading Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel—because her way of folding time and emotion into a single breath is something I’m always learning from. I’m also reading Amber Luna, My Bright Light, a beautifully written indie novel by Kaitlyn Marquart that’s honest, aching, and full of life. I try to balance my reading list between the authors I admire and the ones I want to champion.

My life isn’t full of murder plots or ancient secrets, but I think there’s a mystery in anyone who’s ever wondered where they came from and who they were meant to be. I’m adopted. I live with mental illness. Some days, I feel like I’m made of borrowed pieces—stitched together from other people’s expectations and a past I wasn’t there for. If there’s a mystery worth telling, maybe it’s not about solving something. Maybe it’s about becoming someone.
