A.J. Cosmo "Soaked" came about from a joke where I imagined the film "Saving Private Ryan" being reenacted by children with water guns. From there the book evolved and broke away, becoming a story about bullying and courage while also shedding the satire tone. I'm proud of what it became, even if the tree looks nothing like the seed.
A.J. Cosmo The big project is a second middle grade novel called "Poop." It's about a boy with intestinal disorders and all the horrible things that can happen in grade school as a result. It's a very personal work.
A.J. Cosmo Seeing people's emotional connection to the work. Even if they have a totally different take on what you created, the fact that another person invested in something you made makes the whole process worth it. Seeing lives change as a result of the work is icing on the cake.
A.J. Cosmo Work on something else, relax, or have a fight with the material. Writer's block comes from frustration or exhaustion. Either are solved by changing perspective.
A.J. Cosmo Keep writing and keep reading. Stop judging yourself or your work, remember that you are just starting. No one is born complete, refined, and perfect. We are all working towards being better. The biggest obstacle you have is realizing that you have to put in the time to become what you want to be. There are no shortcuts. There are no coronations. If you find yourself asking "is it worth it?" then you are questioning your resolve. Think long and hard on that, for if it's anything except "it doesn't matter if it's worth it" you may have different priorities.
A.J. Cosmo Some books come as a random thought, something that makes me laugh, or something that connects with another idea that I've had. Lately though, I have learned to listen for stories in the heart of people's problems. There lie the gems. When we can solve personal issues with a story, then we are truly creating great work.
