Sometimes I just wait it out. I may try revising something I've written, or move to a different project. Having multiple projects going on at the same time is helpful, because if I'm not having any success at writing prose, I may have better luck with a short play, or comedy sketch. Sometimes it helps to get away from the project, or to take a long walk in the woods.

The best thing about being a writer is taking an idea, and following it wherever it leads. The inspiration for the Long-Timers series was an image I carried around in my head for over twenty years, before putting anything on paper. Once I did, though, it was fun seeing where the characters were headed and what they'd do next. When I finished writing the novel on which The Long-Timer Chronicles is based, I was actually disappointed I wouldn't be spending anymore time with the characters. I was glad when I had the inspiration to split the novel into separate works, because it means I could hang out with the characters some more.

The best advice is to write. Don't worry if it's not the most profound statement ever made in the history of humankind, just write it down, even if, in the end, it doesn't make into something that's published. Much of the writing process is revising anyway, so get something on paper (or the computer) and worry about polishing it up later.

I have a number of projects I'm working on, including some short plays, a follow-up to a full-length play I finished last year, and the next volume in The Long-Timer Chronicles, which will deal with the villain of the two previous novels. I've also been developing a novel set in Atlanta during the post-Olympic tech boom from the late-90s. I also maintain a blog, so I'm usually trying to develop something to post there.

My brain is sort of like a pinball machine, when an inspiring thought gets in there, it can start to bounce around, activating all sorts of new ideas and stories. I attend a lot of theatrical shows, and I sometimes draw inspiration from those, or I may read an interesting book, or hear an interesting snippet of conversation. A lot of times, I may start with a conversation between two characters, or I may have an image in my head of someone interesting and just start typing.

I came up with the idea more than twenty years ago, dealing with the characters of the Foxes, who are the subjects of the followup, Crazy Like the Foxes. The idea started with the opening scene from that novel, of Renee Fox walking into a museum and looking at a painting of her from hundreds of years ago. Victoria, the main protagonist of Sisters, initially started out as a minor character, but the more I wrote about her, the more important she became to the story.
